It's our Peebles store's birthday tomorrow (we'll be 22 years young) and, as is becoming traditional, we've got a long weekend of offers available to celebrate and to kick start your Christmas shopping. Alite is a small company from the Mission District of San Francisco. Its founders have a background in product design for some of the biggest names in the outdoor industry. It's not often that a national news report directly refers to businesses like ours but when Fort William GP Dr Jim Douglas recently called on shops in the Scottish Highlands to stock tick-removal aids we though it worth pointing out that ticks are also prevalent in the Scottish Borders grasslands and forests and that Out & About stocks the removal tools to which Dr Douglas is referring. BBC Report about Ticks Of course the best way to avoid the risk of tick-borne Lyme's Disease is not to pick one up in the first place. Common sense measures include avoiding long grass and bracken and wearing trousers and long sleeved clothing with close fitting cuffs. Insect repellents are not just effective against flying beasties but will also repel ticks. Here's a handy little object for the camping season. Using soft, fine merino yarns, knitted in the USA Smartwool definitely feels good and we've recently introduced two models of sock to suit a variety of outdoor footwear.

The emphasis in recent weeks has been, necessarily, on kit to keep you dry but with some colder weather forecast over the weekend we thought we'd remind you of some fantastic thermal base layers we've been stocking from Odlo .  Odlo's heritage goes back to 1946 when Norwegian sportsman, Od d Roar Lo fterød started the company by producing  training tights for ice-skating athletes that protected from the cold, and from there the concept grew to encompass a wide range of next-to-skin and winter sports garments.  You will see Odlo products being used by many athletes at this year's Winter Olympics and we stock classic base layer pieces from the WARM and Cubic ranges.
