Down-filled slippers may seem like the height of decadence, but The North Face NSE Tent Mule was a surprise hit when we first introduced them a couple of Christmases ago and there aren't many more luxurious ways of keeping your toes warm. The winter issue of our favourite magazine Scotland Outdoors has landed on the counter at Out & About, fresh from its success in the Scottish Magazine awards 2009 where it scooped the prize for "Best Small Publishing Company Magazine".

Nothing beats a down-filled jacket for instant comfort and warmth. We are currently featuring jackets from Rab and Marmot , both companies which have a long heritage in the field. Founder of Rab the eponymous Rab Carrington started making sleeping bags over 30 years ago to fund his climbing expeditions and the British based company has developed from there making products for some of the most extreme conditions in the world. The classic application for synthetic insulation in outerwear is in a “belay jacket”, a functional piece that can be stowed in your rucksack and then thrown on top of your outer layers when it’s your turn to belay, to help prevent you from cooling down excessively during a period of inactivity. The relative tolerance of synthetic insulation to damp and wet conditions when compared with down-filled insulation means it tends to be well suited to the British winter climate.

It's a long time since Andy Houseman was part of the Saturday staff at Out & About's Harrogate store but we've always kept in touch and followed his mountaineering career with interest. We've just learnt of his recent ascent of the previously unclimbed North Face of Chang Himal (6750m) in the Himalaya, completed Alpine-style in 5 days with fellow mountaineer Nick Bullock- an outstanding achievement.
