Latest edition of Scotland Outdoors

The winter issue of our favourite magazine Scotland Outdoors has landed on the counter at Out & About, fresh from its success in the Scottish Magazine awards 2009 where it scooped the prize for "Best Small Publishing Company Magazine".

Down-filled Jackets & Vests

Nothing beats a down-filled jacket for instant comfort and warmth. We are currently featuring jackets from Rab and Marmot, both companies which have a long heritage in the field. Founder of Rab the eponymous Rab Carrington started making sleeping bags over 30 years ago to fund his climbing expeditions and the British based company has developed from there making products for some of the most extreme conditions in the world. Marmot have similarly humble origins on the other side of the Atlantic, where in 1973 climbing students Eric Reynolds and Dave Huntley began constructing down jackets and sleeping bags in their dorm rooms at the University of California. Their commitment to applying fabric and construction technology to enhance the outdoor experience for everyone has remained core to Marmot’s development over the ensuing 35 years. .....

£5 OFF Haglofs Tight Rucksack

The classic teardrop shape and thermoformed back panel that hugs the contours of your back have made the Haglofs Tight rucksack a firm favourite (even if the name is a tad weird). Now you can enjoy one for less, by downloading our discount voucher and using it in either of our stores.....

Our Synthetic Insulation Explained

The classic application for synthetic insulation in outerwear is in a “belay jacket”, a functional piece that can be stowed in your rucksack and then thrown on top of your outer layers when it’s your turn to belay, to help prevent you from cooling down excessively during a period of inactivity. The relative tolerance of synthetic insulation to damp and wet conditions when compared with down-filled insulation means it tends to be well suited to the British winter climate.

It's a long time since Andy Houseman was part of the Saturday staff at Out & About's Harrogate store but we've always kept in touch and followed his mountaineering career with interest. Andy is sponsored by Mountain Equipment and you can read his account of the climb on their Pro-partner blog here

A new look at the VauDe Splash Air 20+

We’ve been selling the VauDe Splash Air 20+ (£55) for a number of years and sometimes when you get really familiar with a product you can start to take its features for granted and forget how well-considered they are. This thought came to mind when I was preparing one for the window display and caused me to look afresh at what makes this perennial favourite such an award-winning classic.
