Bit of an experiment in Peebles

We're trying something a bit different in the Peebles store at the moment. We've always displayed our clothing grouped by function: all the legwear together; the waterproof jackets in another part of the shop; the midlayers on a different rail again. It's seemed like the obvious way to make use of our limited space and when you want to chat to us about the relative merits of our products it's good to have them all to hand. But we wondered if there might be a better way to present the character of the brands we stock.

I'm in the middle of the buying season for the kit we'll be selling in Winter 2013-14 and I realised that I don't just think  about what to buy in relation to competing products offered by other brands but also in terms of how the things we've chosen complement each other within the brand. That can be a major design feature like a group of products all aimed at the same end use or a little thing like a matching coloured trim across a few separate items. We thought we'd give it a go at communicating these considerations to you and so we've had a big move round with all the clothing from a specific manufacturer now gathered together. So if, for example, you know that Rab® trousers are usually a good fit for you, you'll now find them all on the same rail and they might be hanging next to a Rab® Baselyer that nicely matches the fleece that you've already got. We hope you like the new arrangement- please let us know when you're next in the shop

25 years on...still going strong

In November 1992 we were working hard to get our shop in Peebles opened. We were living in a draughty old shepherd's cottage in the Moorfoot Hills at the time and one day, our landlady remarked that there was a famous mountaineer coming to give a fundraising talk in aid of the village hall. It seemed unlikely but yes, Chris Bonington was coming to Carrington. It proved to be a memorable evening that people still occasionally mention to us today. Standing room only with an eclectic audience of school children, Women's Institute stalwarts, elders of the kirk and a smattering of outdoor enthusiasts. It probably wasn't the kind of gathering Bonington was used to speaking to but his professionalism and communication skills ensured that his stories came alive for everyone in the room. At the end of the presentation we joined the scrum of autograph hunters and got his signature on a poster which we hung in our new shop on the day it opened. It stayed on the wall for quite a few...
