Our Harrogate shop has just taken delivery of the new Brear Grylls Survival Series by knife specialists Gerber. Here's a first look at what's available:

Bear demonstrates the compact Fire Starter with ferrocerium rod and metal striker (price £15)

Next up is the Compact Scout Knife (£20) a thin and lightweight folding knife with ½ serrated high carbon stainless steel drop point blade. It features a nail nick in blade for easy opening and a Lock Back that locks the blade securely in place and maximizes safety during closing.

The Folding Sheath Knife (£40) is for people who want a serious blade, yet compact, foldable and able to fit neatly into a sheath, on a belt and out of the way. It too has a ½ serrated high carbon stainless steel drop point blade but this time it features a dual-sided thumb stud for easy single-hand opening. The ergonomic textured rubber grip maximizes comfort and reduces slippage and the Lock Back locks the blade securely in place and maximizes safety during closing. It's supplied with a nylon sheath of lightweight, military-grade, mildew resistant nylon that allows for horizontal or vertical carry.

The Ultimate Multi Tool (£50) lives up to its name with rugged construction, spring loaded pliers, external locking tools and an extra grippy handle.

They are not available for purchase by anyone under the age of 18. You should be aware that you may be committing an offence if you carry a knife in a public place without good reason.

25 years on...still going strong

In November 1992 we were working hard to get our shop in Peebles opened. We were living in a draughty old shepherd's cottage in the Moorfoot Hills at the time and one day, our landlady remarked that there was a famous mountaineer coming to give a fundraising talk in aid of the village hall. It seemed unlikely but yes, Chris Bonington was coming to Carrington. It proved to be a memorable evening that people still occasionally mention to us today. Standing room only with an eclectic audience of school children, Women's Institute stalwarts, elders of the kirk and a smattering of outdoor enthusiasts. It probably wasn't the kind of gathering Bonington was used to speaking to but his professionalism and communication skills ensured that his stories came alive for everyone in the room. At the end of the presentation we joined the scrum of autograph hunters and got his signature on a poster which we hung in our new shop on the day it opened. It stayed on the wall for quite a few...

Harrogate Store says SueMe®

SueMe® design and produce responsibly sourced sportswear and our Harrogate store is pleased to introduce their range with the Mens Tree Trunks and Ladies Beech Shorties (both £16). Manufactured from a supersoft Modal that's produced from Beech tree pulp they are fast drying and naturally antibacterial. Made with a 210g knit with double gusset to balance fit and comfort with durability. 5% Lycra adds support and helps retain shape and fit, day after day, wash after wash. Seams are placed out of the way of rubbing or chaffing points. The care label is printed using water based inks. A mixture of flat and overlock stitching for comfort and longevity combined with a scalloped edge knitted elasticated waistband with a soft brushed back make SueMe® Beech Shorties and Tree Trunks incredibly comfortable.
